Wood Ducks III

$4750

Oil

24 x 24″

This painting is part of a large series of works I have been creating for several years, focused on the woods and pond near my home. All the larger paintings in this body of work have been developed from smaller plein air studies executed on location. I often sit quietly, studying and observing before I paint, and the wood ducks had no sense that I was there as they swam past me and climbed up on to the downed tree, one by one. Over time I have come to understand that what is revealed by nature here is universal – it is part of the fabric of the world which exists in every location. It is my responsibility to act as an interpreter and transform these experiences into art. In this critical time of habitat loss and extinctions, I hope this work may serve to remind us that we need to preserve the natural world to survive ourselves. It is my intention to present the entire body of work in a traveling exhibition when completed.

“Nature rarely gets it wrong, to which we can now add, neither does John Hulsey” – Ken Burns

Daybreak on the Pond

$11500

Oil

36 x 36″

This painting is part of a large series of works I have been creating for several years, focused on the woods and pond near my home. All the larger paintings in this body of work have been developed from smaller plein air studies executed on location. This is a natural environment, little touched by man and under no hunting pressure whatsoever. I often sit quietly, studying and observing before I paint, and am often rewarded with appearances by birds and animals who come to this safe haven. Over time I have come to understand that what is revealed by nature here is universal – it is part of the fabric of the world which exists in every location. It is my responsibility to act as an interpreter and transform these experiences into art. In this critical time of habitat loss and extinctions, I hope this work may serve to remind us that we need to preserve the natural world to survive.
