About Jan Martin McGuire

American Artist Jan Martin McGuire, known as an “Artist, Naturalist and Conservationist” has been a full time artist for forty years.

Jan travels extensively in a constant quest to satisfy the gnawing hunger inside her, which is to learn and experience nature in every way she can. Jan has traveled extensively all over North America including Alaska, British Columbia, Ontario, Yellowstone, Montana, the Everglades and the deserts of the Southwest. She has also traveled to Central and South America, Costa Rica and five countries in Africa.

Jan grew up in the foothills of the rockies, climbing trees, catching snakes, and drawing them when the weather was inclement. She knew she would always end up living on a mountain – but she never imagined it would be in Africa. Jan and her nature photographer husband, James Gary Hines II, now reside on the slopes of Mount Meru in Tanzania.

Working in Acrylic paint on fine cotton canvas, Jan creates the fine details, textures and lighting that are the hallmarks of her work. Manipulating the paint with her brushes, sponges, saranwrap and fingers, Jan creates lifelike renditions of fur, feathers, mosses and rocks. The surrounding habitat is always scientifically correct, yet an artistic backdrop to the main subject of the wildlife she is depicting. Jan’s goal is for the viewer not to feel as if they are viewing a fine painting, but rather, that they are actually seeing and experiencing the scene itself.

Jan’s work is in private, corporate and museum collections around the world. Museums that her work is included in their permanent collections include: HIRAM BLAUVELT ART MUSEUM – Oradell, NJ
LEIGH YAWKEY WOODSON ART MUSEUM – Wausau, Wi

WARREN WILDLIFE GALLERY & MUSEUM – Austin, Tx.

Her work is carried at Trailside Galleries -Jackson, Wy., Cultural Heritage – Arusha, Tanzania and Picture this Gallery – Alberta, Canada.
